Instructor BIO: Vanessa Steele is a clay artist, educator, and studio owner based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is the founder and owner of The Art Place Studio, a thriving creative space she has operated for over 15 years. The studio offers a wide range of hands-on experiences including paint-your-own pottery, pottery wheel classes, hand-building, fused glass, stained glass, and workshops designed to make art accessible to all ages and skill levels.
In addition to her studio, Vanessa is the creator of Teaching Clay, a subscription-based educational platform she has led for the past four years. Teaching Clay supports studio owners, K–12 educators, and clay instructors by providing step-by-step resources, curriculum development, and proven strategies to confidently teach clay and expand their programs.
Vanessa is also the founder of 843Clay, a growing community that connects and supports Lowcountry clay artists.
A passionate advocate for ceramics education, Vanessa has taught wheel throwing at Mayco Pottery Camp in both 2025 and 2026, and has presented at the CCSA National Convention. She previously led the ceramics program for the School of the Arts Charleston and has been instrumental in bringing clay programs into Title I schools throughout the Lowcountry.
Vanessa’s work centers on making clay approachable, meaningful, and profitable—whether she is teaching beginners at the wheel, mentoring studio owners, or developing innovative programming that brings communities together through creativity.
